Causes And Prevention Of Hearing Loss

There are many causes of hearing loss, some of which are curable and preventable whereas some of them are beyond cure. Some of the causes are inherited and some of them happen as one gets older. Some of the problems of hearing loss are preventable through hearing aids whereas some require surgery.

  1. Otosclerosis: This is a disease of the middle ear. This disease makes the inner ear harder for the tinny bones to move freely. The medical name of this disease is conductive hearing loss and it is curable with surgery.
  2. Meniere’s disease: This is also a disease of the inner ear. It is usually found in adults between the age of 30 and 50 years old. Ringing in the ear and dizziness are the common symptoms of this disease. The person suffering from this kind of disease becomes sensitive to loud sound.
  3. Autoimmune inner ear disease: It is observed that this kind of hearing loss happens fast. You are advised to see your doctor immediately when you suddenly lose your hearing. Timely medical treatment can help keep hearing loss at a minimum level.
  4. Ototoxic medications: It should be kept in mind that there are some medicines that cause hearing loss. Therefore, it is necessary for you to consult your doctor before you take medicines.
  5. Loud noise: loud noise is also considered as one of the common causes of the hearing loss. Loud noise, such as a sudden explosion, may cause permanent hearing loss. Keep in mind that noise-induced hearing loss is often painless and usually happens over time.
  6. Acoustic neuroma: This is also a common cause of hearing loss. Acoustic neuroma is an example of a tumor. In this type of disease, patient feels his/her ears full and feels ringing in his/her ears. The patient needs to see his/her doctor immediately for the treatment of an acoustic neuroma.
  7. Head injury: likewise, brain injury, a hole in the eardrum, and damage to the middle ear can cause hearing loss.
  8. The Problem in the inner ear: exposure to loud noise and aging also may cause wear and tear on the hairs or nerve cells in the cochlea. Cochlea sends sound signals to the brain, when these hairs are damaged or missing electrical signals are not properly transmitted and hearing loss occurs.
  9. A gradual accumulation of earwax. Earwax can also block the ear canal and inhibit the transmission of sound waves. This problem can be cured with the removal of earwax.
  10. Ear infection: Ear infection is also a major cause that affects the hearing loss. Therefore, a patient is required to immediately seek medical treatment.

Prevention of hearing loss.

Following are some important measures that can help you prevent hearing loss.

  • Look after your ears in the workplace.Specially designed earmuffs that bear a resemblance to earphones can safeguard your ears by taking most loud sounds down to an adequate level.
  • Have your hearing test on a regular basis.You must get your ear checked on regular basis if you work in a noisy environment. Regular testing of your hearing can provide early detection of hearing loss
  • Avoid or take an appropriate pause in recreational activities.Some activities, such as riding a snowmobile, hunting or listening to rock concerts for long periods of time, can damage your hearing. Wearing hearing protectors or taking breaks from the noise during loud recreational activities can protect your ears.
